The best thing about electric power bikes is that they are for everyone! From seasoned cyclists, baby boomers or those who have lost their license. Electric bikes are becoming more popular than ever, and with good reason:

  • They produce zero carbon emissions
  • They promote a healthy lifestyle
  • They are a fast way to get around
  • You don’t have to worry about parking

Who are electric bikes best for?

We have seen celebrities using them

Leonardo DiCaprio, Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins, the Jonas Brothers and Daryl Hannah are all electric bike riders!

They are great for baby boomers

Baby boomers who want to get back on a bike but are worried about their ability to ride a traditional bike. An e bike is perfect for them – with the power assist to give them the extra boost when dealing with steep hills.

People who want to commute

Sick of traffic congestion and long commutes that leave you frustrated even before you get to your destination? This is where ebikes are the best. Cruise right past that traffic and get to work without the sweat.

People with injuries

If you have had any injuries or joint problems, electric power bikes are perfect. They are designed so that you can still enjoy the benefits of cycling without as much strain and pressure on your joints

People who have lost their license

Uh-oh – lost your license? It’s those long weekend double merits points right? Don’t worry; an electric bike is your solution. Much faster than a regular bike, cheaper than taxi rides and more reliable than public transport.

Seasoned cyclists

Even seasoned cyclists who may scoff at electric bikes can get major benefits from them. If you have a long commute ahead, an electric bike can cut your travel time in half, and you arrive to work fresh and sweat free. Think about it, an extra hour to sleep in the morning!

Bike Commuting Puts Cars to Shame

Sydney roads are so clogged and congested, despite the months of construction and expenditure on the roads, none of this has led to a decrease in travel time.

Sydney roads are so jammed up during peak hour that it is faster to commute by bike that car. To put this theory to the test a Cyclist Paul McDonald raced journalist Tim Vollmer in his car from Ryde to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, all during the worst of the morning peak hour traffic.

The results?

The Cyclist took less than 32 minutes to reach the Sydney Harbour Bridge destination while the journalist in the motor vehicle took almost 80 minutes! That is a difference of almost ONE HOUR!

Much of the difference can be explained by the additional bike lanes that have been created in Sydney – part of an ongoing Sydney Cycle Strategy.

What this shows is that commuting by bike is the way of the future.

Imagine how much faster this journey would have been on an electric bike?

An electric bike allows the average cyclist to ride faster than a much more experienced cyclist on a regular bike, with much less effort and in hilly areas the additional power of an electric bike results in faster travel with less exertion.

Electric bike cyclists report that a sample trip from Lilyfield to Circular Quay takes 22 minutes, and costs about 10cents to 12cents a week in electricity to charge the batteries on his bike!

An electric bike is the cheapest and most efficient form of transport. It is accessible to those who are less fit, while positively affecting the environment, reducing carbon emissions and taking the hassle out of traffic and parking.

Do you have your own bike commuting story to share with us?

And don't forget to book a test ride. If you haven't tried an electric power bike, we highly recommend it! You can get in touch with Reef Bikes who can organize a test ride for you.

Is Your Car Making You Fat? Get an E Bike! http://ping.fm/bHW7C

Is Your Car Making You Fat? Get an E Bike!

A recent study published by David Bassett of the University of Tennessee and John Pucher of Rutgers University found a strong link between active modes of transportation (such as walking and bike riding) and obesity rates in 17 industrialized nations sampled in the study.

We have all heard about the obesity epidemic, and now it seems that there is a solution – ditch the car in favor of walking or bike riding.

The countries with the highest levels of active transportation also had the lowest rates of obesity. There is an inverse relationship between active transportation and obesity – meaning that the more we passively use cars, the fatter we get.

In the United States alone, there is a 25-33% obesity rate, with only 12 per cent of the population utilizing active transportation like bicycling and walking.

Compare that to the other countries that were sampled in the study:
·         Latvia: 67 percent of the population uses active transportation and 14 percent are obese.
·         Sweden: 62 percent use active transportation and 9 percent are obese.
·         Netherlands: 52 percent use active transportation and 11 percent are obese.

Other Western countries that shy away from active transportation have similar problems with obesity rates:
·         Canada: 19 percent use active transportation and 23 percent are obese.
·         Australia: 14 percent use active transportation and 21 percent are obese.

The study basically concluded that Europeans walk three times as much as Americans and bike ride up to four times as much as their American counterparts. The difference equates to burning up to 10 pounds more than Americans.

So the next question is – what is the solution? What is a great option to encourage more people to utilize active transportation to improve their health and perhaps even benefit the environment?
Countries like Australia, Canada and the U.S have a heavy reliance on motor vehicles for transportation. Given the obesity epidemic and global warming crisis it is time to embrace some healthier options like walking or riding a bicycle.

One possible solution is to get an electric bike as an alternative way to travel, as well as giving you the foundation of a healthy fitness regime. The several power settings eliminate concerns about overexertion due to steep or long rides, and have great benefits for cardio endurance, balance and stability.

You can take control of your fitness and get back into a healthy lifestyle with an electric bike. Use it to get to work, run errands or simply enjoy scenic trips in your free time. The power assisted motor gives you the freedom to choose your pace and level of exertion.

More celebrities riding the e bike wave! http://ping.fm/RzzCK

More Celebrities Riding the Electric Bike Wave

It seems that celebrities are catching on to the latest electric bike boom. Leonardo DiCaprio was snapped riding around in New York City on his electric powered bike

Leo is a committed environmentalist crusader, having created a documentary on the 11th hour that focuses on the issue of global warming and other ecological concerns and his foundation urges people to take action to combat the disastrous effects of the current climate crisis.

Leonardo DiCaprio also drives a hybrid car, has solar panels on his house and has teamed up with Al Gore to help raise awareness around global warming issues.

Daryl Hannah is the latest Eco-friendly actor that has chosen the Green commuting option with an electric bike that has zero carbon emissions and is a healthy and green way to get around.

Daryl Hannah is another active environmentalist who takes full advantage of green technology, from composting, running her house entirely on solar panels to recycling and even running her car from vegetable oil from fast food restaurants.

Hannah also runs an Eco-friendly product company called “Love Life Goods” and has a weekly video blog on sustainable solutions.

Jay Leno is also another electric bike enthusiast, who has called electric bikes the “future of inner city commuting”. Check out his electric bike reviews at Jay Lenos Garage

Finally we have the Jonas Brothers embracing electric power bikes.

The musical brothers are not newcomers to environmental activism, having been part of a Disney Project called Friends for Change: Project Green which helps kids help the planet, focusing on climate, waste, water and habitats with a guide of simple action steps. The kids who are involved register online, track their impact and then vote on how Disney should divide its donations to environmental causes. What a great idea!

One of the brothers, Nick, was quoted as saying:
“Being eco-friendly is important to us,” said Nick Jonas. “We worked with our record label to come up with the first-ever CD-VU+ format, a 100-percent recyclable package.”

And now they are also taking the Eco-friendly commuting option with electric powered bikes.

Look, even if you couldn’t care less what the celebrities are doing, you should still get an electric bike. Consider some of the major benefits:

  • Cost savings (petrol, insurance, registration)
  • Reducing Carbon emissions
  • Lose weight
  • It’s fun!
  • Fast way to commute to work
  • No more traffic jams
  • No more parking tickets

Why the Pope Should Get an Electric Bike

The Washington Post reports that the Pope Benedict wants a more eco friendly and energy efficient way to commute. He wants the Pope Mobile to go Green!

The Green Pope should be an example to us all based on his promotion of sustainability and conservation on resources! Why not follow in his footsteps and get an electric bike. These bikes cut carbon emissions, are a healthy way to ride and reduce our carbon footprint.

Major benefits of an electric bike are:

1. They are a Green, environmentally friendly and sustainable form of transportation. They reduce carbon emissions as well as traffic and congestion on the roads. As Trevor Reichman points out in Treehugger, “An electric bicycle is about 100 times more efficient than a car carrying one person.”
For anyone concerned about reducing their carbon footprint, an electric bike is the perfect way to do your part in helping out the environment.

2. They promote health and fitness. These bikes are not just for the lazy people that want to avoid exercise. Sure, they have the added motor assist benefit, but this can be turned off at any time and you can use the electric bike for your regular workout. Too many Australians are not getting enough exercise in their lives. This is a great way to build your health and fitness regime, while having the advantage of extra power  to face hills and get you to work quicker if you are commuting

3. You can use it to commute to work – without arriving sweaty. Simply use the power assist and you will arrive clean and fresh!

4. Avoid Traffic and Congestion -  They reduce congestion on the roads and traffic nightmares. Are you sick of being stuck in traffic? Electric bikes allow you  to maneuver through traffic, get to your destination faster and not have to worry about parking.

5. They are cheap to run, compared to the fuel, oil, registration and insurance costs of cars. In most places, you will spend from 3 to 5 CENTS for a full charge.
You get 50km or 30 miles on that. That's a HUGE saving compared the price of fuel these days.

6. Electric Bikes get people to enjoy the fun of riding again, especially baby boomers or those who may be out of shape or have injuries. Ride in the fresh air and have fun! These bikes are great for newbies or people who love to ride but are worried that they may not have the strength and fitness. An electric bike is the perfect option.

Reef Bikes was conceived out of a passion for cycling and sustainable transport use. Reef Bikes is dedicated to assisting people to rediscover the fun in riding a bike as well as the associated health, cost and environmental benefits that come with it.

If you haven't tried an electric power bike, we highly recommend it! You can get in touch with Reef Bikes who can organize a test ride for you.
If you happen to know the Pope, please share this post with him!

Electric Power Bike News

1. Electric Bikes Sales Save the Bicycle Sector in the Netherlands

In Amsterdam, an economic decline has led to a 7% drop in regular bicycles. However, the total sector was saved by e-Bikes – the only category that showed an increase in sales over the year. Sales for the e-Bike rose by 10%, accounting for a total of 14% market share of total number of bikes sold in 2010.

2. Electric Bikes Voted as one of the Top 10 Things we should see more of by 2020

Blast magazine has compiled a list of the top 10 things we should see more of in this coming decade and E-Bikes were featured on the list! The list takes into account market trends, consumer preferences and research and development initiatives.
The authors note that the electric bicycles are likely to be much more widespread and common in usage by the end of the decade.
They also state their personal preference for an electric bike due to its environmentally friendly qualities.

3. Electric Bikes Helping Cut Crime
There has been a lot of positive feedback on the use of e bikes for policingin the city of London. A Cycle Squad Sergeant said that the bikes allowed police to cover greater ground in a shorter amount of time, allowing for access to areas otherwise inaccessible by car, and the added power of the electric assist get the officers to move quicker.

5. After a Shaky Start, it’s Time to Take E-Bikes Seriously

Publisher of Electric Bike Magazine says that after having a shaky start over a decade ago, a lot has changed in the world of electric bikes.

Most notably:
  • Almost all e bikes use lithium-ion battery packs, storing up to 5 times more energy as the older versions
  • Massive reduction in battery weight from 15 kilograms to 2-3 kilograms
  • Significant research and development driven by strong European market
  • More efficient motors, increased reliability in performance and control systems
  • The entrance of high profile companies into the market like Bosch, Panasonic and Shimano
